Reader review of the Nesco American Harvest Snackmaster dehydrator
Even though this site is relatively new, it's already getting some reader reviews. Here's an email Don from Indiana sent in about his American Harvest Snackmaster (thanks Don!):
Some of the winters in Indiana can be brutal but when deer season opens in November, everyone gets excited about getting out his or her dehydrators to make venison jerky. It has turned into quite a competition to see who can make the most delectable jerky with their machines and seasonings.
I had never joined in until last year when I noticed an inexpensive model on sale at the local hardware store. There was always plenty of deer to go around but I had no way to store it. With a price tag of under $40, I decided that I could get my money back in making jerky. I took my Nesco/American Harvest Snackmaster home and got out a package of deer roast.
The instructions were so easy to follow and I had jerky in just a few hours. Five trays were more than enough to dry the entire roast and the clean up took very little time. This was the only dehydrator that I had ever seen with a fan and heater in the top but it must have had something to do with the great uniform pieces that were created. We do not like our jerky dry and tough as shoe leather but a little moist so I removed them thirty minutes early. The strips were to die for.
At Thanksgiving, everyone in my family wanted my recipe for the jerky but I declined. I just surprised them at Christmas with their very own American Harvest Snackmaster dehydrator and we started the competitions all over again, this time on a level playing field. And who could imagine spending $40 a couple for something that was so much fun.
Next I tried apples with just a sprinkling of sugar and cinnamon. I couldn't keep them in the house! Funny how none of my family would eat a fresh apple but turn it into a snack and they were gone. Pears and peaches are always so abundant on the fruit trees that they spoiled before I could get to them for canning, but not this year. There will be no more wasted fruit.
Treats for ballgames, gifts for birthdays; I can't imagine only using my dehydrator in the winter for jerky. The best part is that now I don't make as many pies with all of that fruit and no one seems to mind. They want the crispy fruit snacks. How healthy is that! I think I'll try tomatoes next...
I would highly recommend the Nesco American Harvest 5-Tray FD-35 425-Watt Snackmaster Dehydrator to anyone on a tight budget that wants to look like a pro.
